More than 112,000 men, women and children in the United States are currently waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. In Iowa alone, over 600 people are waiting for a transplant at any given time. The numbers continue to grow each year; every day more than 100 people are added to the national transplant waiting list and 18 people die while waiting for needed organs and tissues. One donor can save or enhance up to 60 lives through organ, eye and tissue donation.
Transplantation is one of the most remarkable success stories in the history of medicine. But despite continuing advances in medicine and technology, the need for organs and tissue is vastly greater than the number available for transplantation. Transplantation gives hope to thousands of people with organ failure and provides many others with active and renewed lives.
