Navigating Healthcare Careers at CCMH

The healthcare industry is facing unprecedented challenges, particularly in staffing. From nationwide shortages to the unique needs of rural communities, hospitals like Crawford County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) are actively seeking dedicated professionals.

Meeting the Need

Macy Waldemar Webb, CCMH’s Director of Human Resources, said the hospital is exploring ways to meet these challenges.

“First, we’re aggressively recruiting to fill current openings. Second, we have scholarships available to our existing staff to assist them in gaining additional education and training. Finally, we’ve created an innovative internship program that will allow us to create a pipeline to help fill future openings.”

Nursing Openings Are Persistent

Waldemar Webb has almost five years of experience at CCMH. She paints a clear picture of the current healthcare landscape.

“Whether this is an echo of the shortages we saw during the pandemic, or if there are other reasons, there is a persistent nurse shortage. This challenge is felt across the entire country. While CCMH boasts a strong team, the demand for skilled nurses, particularly for night shifts, remains high.”

Waldemar Webb went on to say travel nurses are no longer a convenient option.

“Travel nursing once lured many with higher pay. Now we see a shift is occurring where new graduates are increasingly drawn to community-based roles. They’re seeking stability and the chance to serve their hometowns. However, the average tenure for nurses is now shorter, emphasizing the need for continuous recruitment.”

Sign On Bonuses Are Offered

CCMH is actively addressing these hiring challenges by offering competitive sign-on bonuses. Waldemar Webb explained the bonuses are available for Registered Nurse (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) positions, especially for critical night shift positions in the ER and medical unit.

“Along with our RN and LPN positions, we also have openings for radiology techs and paramedics. We  recognize the vital role these professionals play in patient care.”

What makes CCMH an attractive employer?

Waldemar Webb emphasized the unique opportunity to care for a diverse patient population from children to those in end-of-life care.

“This breadth of experience is invaluable for those seeking to explore different areas of healthcare. Additionally, the close-knit community atmosphere allows staff to build meaningful relationships with patients, often neighbors and friends.”

The Value of Employee Benefits

While salary is a consideration, Waldemar Webb stressed the importance of evaluating the entire benefits package.

“CCMH offers comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, along with participation in the IPERS retirement plan, a significant long-term benefit. We also offer a competitive salary base on a survey of all healthcare employers in the state of Iowa.”

Beyond Traditional Hiring

CCMH is investing in the future of healthcare through its paid summer internship program. Waldemar Webb notes the program is now in its second year.

“This is a paid internship program. It offers hands-on experience in nursing, radiology, and physical therapy. This year, nursing interns will rotate through different departments, providing a broader understanding of hospital operations. The internship is open to individuals 18 and older. In particular, we think this is ideal for college students or recent high school graduates considering a healthcare career. While a CNA license is preferred for nursing interns, it’s not required. The program offers a valuable opportunity to explore different healthcare paths and gain practical experience.”

Non-clinical Roles Also Available

In addition to clinical roles, Waldemar Webb says CCMH also has openings in non-technical departments.

“Currently,  we are seeking candidates for bilingual financial counselor and a network analyst roles. If anyone has an interest in a career at CCMH, I encourage them to apply, even if they’re unsure.”

All job applications are handled online through the ccmhia.com website, under the “Careers” section. For those without internet access, paper applications are available at the hospital’s information desk.

If you’re considering a career in healthcare, CCMH offers a supportive environment, competitive benefits, and opportunities for professional growth. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a student exploring your options, CCMH invites you to join their team and make a difference in the community.
