November is recognized as Diabetes Awareness Month, a time to focus on one of the most common — yet manageable — chronic health conditions affecting millions of Americans.
What Is Diabetes?
Diabetes occurs when the body cannot properly regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels. Over time, high blood sugar can lead to serious health complications — but with the right care, support, and education, people with diabetes can live long, healthy lives.
There are two main types of diabetes:
- Type 1 Diabetes: Autoimmune condition that results in the body’s inability to make insulin.
- Type 2 Diabetes: The body produces insulin but doesn’t use it well. This type can often be managed through a combinations of healthy habits and medication.
Why Early Detection Matters
Many people live with diabetes or prediabetes without realizing it. Regular checkups, lab work, and blood sugar screenings are essential for early diagnosis and effective management. CCMH encourages everyone to “know your numbers” by participating in local wellness screenings or visiting their healthcare provider for routine bloodwork.
Support from CCMH’s Diabetes Management Program
For those living with diabetes, CCMH offers a Diabetes Management Program led by Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist Sara Gaul. The program provides personalized education, nutrition guidance, and practical support to help patients take control of their health and reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications.
“Managing diabetes isn’t just about medication — it’s about understanding your body, making small daily changes, and having the right support,” says Sara. “Our goal is to help each patient feel confident and capable in their care.”
