The Power of Volunteering: Making a Difference, One Act at a Time
Volunteering, the act of giving one’s time and energy to help others, is a powerful force that can transform both individuals and communities. It’s a simple yet profound way to make a positive impact on the world. By dedicating time to causes we care about, we not only help others but also enrich our own lives.
Why Volunteer?
The benefits of volunteering are numerous and far-reaching. Dustin Durbin, Community Outreach and Volunteer Services Coordinator at CCMH, says there are several reasons why you should consider volunteering.
“First, I think about personal fulfillment, the sense of purpose and satisfaction of knowing that you’ve made a difference in someone else’s life. Second, the community impact. By volunteering, you contribute to the betterment of Denison and Crawford County. Finally, it’s an opportunity to meet new friends and build relationships with like-minded individuals. I think the socialization provided through volunteering might be the best benefit of all.”
How to Get Started
If you’re interested in volunteering, Durbin lists the opportunities available through CCMH.
“We work to help our volunteers discover their passion through our programs. At CCMH, the Community Cares Patient Transportation Service is run almost entirely by volunteers as drivers and hosts or hostesses. The Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) helps seniors with their coverages for Medicare, especially Part D. And the Good Samaritan Center Thrift Shop, which is an outreach of the Hospital Foundation of Crawford County (HFCC), needs people to help accept and sort donation items for resale.”
If someone has an interest in a particular volunteer opportunity, Durbin suggests trying it out before deciding whether to participate.
“As I said previously, it’s important for volunteers to participate in an effort they’re passionate about. We want them to see what it’s like on the Transportation Service or at the Thrift Shop before fully committing to it. It’s especially important for volunteers to determine how much time they can realistically commit to volunteering by being honest with themselves about their schedule and commitments.”
Making a Lasting Impact
Durbin relates how a lasting impact can be made through volunteering.
“Whether it’s been through the Transportation Service, or Thrift Shop, or SHIIP program, I have made some lasting friendships. And there isn’t a better feeling in the world than having a patient or patient’s family tell you how much they appreciate what you are doing for them. It makes it all worthwhile. My goal is to get more people involved so they can experience what I’ve experienced – the value of giving back to someone else in the community who needs help.”
