CCMH created $70.7 million impact on local economy in 2024

In all, Iowa’s hospitals provided 141,708 jobs statewide

DES MOINES – Last year, Crawford County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) generated 595 jobs, both directly and indirectly, and added $70.7 million to the county’s economy, according to the latest study by the Iowa Hospital Association.

“No matter how you look at it, those are impressive numbers,” said Erin Muck, President and CEO of CCMH. “Another way to consider it is, CCMH returns to the local economy more than 35 times the amount we collect in property taxes. Our ability to add jobs and pay competitive wages, while offering the highest quality in healthcare, helps all the citizens of Crawford County.”

Paul Plumb, Executive Director of the Chamber and Development Council of Crawford County (CDC), echoed those sentiments.

“Businesses like CCMH not only add to the livability of our county and communities, but it is also a huge asset from both the health care and economic perspectives.”

According to IHA, CCMH delivered an additional $2.3 million in community benefits while adding another $2 million in charity care.

The study was compiled from hospital-submitted data to the American Hospital Association’s annual survey of hospitals. The study found that Iowa hospitals employed 141,708 people in 2024. As an income source, hospitals provide over $9.6 billion in wages. Hospital expenses accounted for over $22.9 billion of the state’s gross domestic product.

“These benefits aren’t just numbers,” said Chris Mitchell, Iowa Hospital Association (IHA) President and CEO. “They represent real programs and services that improve lives across Iowa. Many of these initiatives wouldn’t exist without the leadership and commitment of our hospitals and health systems.”

About IHA: The Iowa Hospital Association is a voluntary membership organization representing the interests of hospitals and health systems to business, government, and consumer audiences.
