January Is Thyroid Awareness Month

January is Thyroid Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of thyroid health and the role this small but powerful gland plays in overall wellness. Thyroid conditions are common, often manageable, and frequently go undiagnosed because symptoms can be subtle or mistaken for stress or normal aging.

What Does the Thyroid Do?

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of the neck. It helps regulate many essential body functions, including metabolism, energy levels, heart rate, and body temperature. When the thyroid isn’t working properly, it can affect multiple systems throughout the body.

Common Thyroid Conditions

The two most common thyroid disorders are hypothyroidism, when the thyroid does not produce enough hormone, and hyperthyroidism, when the thyroid produces too much hormone. Both conditions can interfere with daily life but are often treatable when diagnosed early.

Signs and Symptoms of Thyroid Disease

Symptoms can develop gradually and vary from person to person. Common signs include ongoing fatigue, unexplained weight gain or weight loss, sensitivity to cold or heat, hair thinning or dry skin, mood changes such as anxiety or depression, irregular heartbeat, and changes in bowel habits. Because these symptoms overlap with many other conditions, thyroid disorders can be difficult to identify without testing.

How Thyroid Conditions Are Diagnosed

Thyroid conditions are typically diagnosed through a review of symptoms and medical history, a physical exam, and simple blood tests that measure thyroid hormone levels. Early detection can help prevent complications and support long-term health.

Thyroid Care at CCMH

At Crawford County Memorial Hospital, patients have access to board-certified family medicine providers, on-site laboratory testing, and coordinated follow-up care close to home. Primary care providers are often the first point of contact for thyroid concerns and can order testing, review results, and guide next steps for monitoring or treatment.

When to Talk to a Provider

If you’re experiencing persistent symptoms or have a family history of thyroid disease, consider speaking with a healthcare provider. Many thyroid conditions are highly treatable, and early attention can make a meaningful difference.
