As back-to-school season approaches, many parents are checking items off their to-do lists—including scheduling appointments for their children. One question we hear often at the CCMH Medical Clinic is: Does my child need a sports physical, a well-child visit, or both?
While these appointments may seem similar, they serve different purposes. Understanding the difference can help ensure your child is healthy, safe, and ready for the school year and sports season.
What Is a Sports Physical?
A sports physical, also known as a pre-participation physical examination, is designed to determine whether your child can safely participate in sports and other physical activities.
During a sports physical, your provider will typically:
- Review your child’s medical history
- Check height, weight, blood pressure, and vital signs
- Listen to the heart and lungs
- Evaluate joints, muscles, flexibility, and overall physical health
- Identify any concerns that could affect sports participation
The primary goal is to help prevent injuries and ensure your child can safely compete.
What Is a Well-Child Visit?
A well-child visit is a thorough annual checkup that focuses on your child’s overall health, not just their ability to play sports.
During a well-child visit, your provider may:
- Monitor growth and development
- Review nutrition and healthy habits
- Discuss sleep, mental health, and emotional well-being
- Update vaccinations, if needed
- Address any ongoing health concerns
- Answer questions about your child’s health and development
- Provide guidance based on your child’s age
These annual visits help identify potential health concerns early and support your child’s long-term health.
What’s the Difference?
While a sports physical focuses on athletic participation, a well-child visit looks at the complete picture of your child’s health.
Sports physicals are often required for school athletics. Well-child appointments are recommended every year for all children.
Can a Well-Child Visit Count as a Sports Physical?
In many cases, yes! If your child is due for their annual well-child visit, your provider can often complete the required sports participation forms during the same appointment. This saves you time, reduces the need for multiple visits, and ensures your child receives a complete health evaluation. Ask our staff when you register for your appointment if you are able to do these appointments at the same time.
If your child has already had their annual well-child visit, a sports physical may still be completed separately if required by their school or activity.
Schedule Early
Late summer is one of the busiest times of the year for sports physicals and well-child exams. Scheduling your appointment early helps ensure your child is ready for practices, tryouts, and the first day of school without the last-minute rush.
Kindergarteners and seniors must have immunizations prior to starting their first day of school. Check with your school or medical provider to ensure your child’s immunizations are up to date. For more information on the immunization schedule, click here.
