Are you a student interested in a career in healthcare? Whether you are just finishing high school or are well into your pre-med studies, finding real-world experience is often the hardest part of the journey. In our latest podcast episode, we sat down with Macy Waldemar Webb, Human Resources Director, and Dana Neemann, Director of Education and Patient Experience, to discuss the summer internship program at Crawford County Memorial Hospital.
More Than Just Shadowing
Now in its third year, the CCMH summer internship program has evolved into a paid experience. This year, the hospital is offering more positions than ever before, including:
- Five Nursing intern positions
- One Rehab Services intern position
- One Radiology intern position
To ensure a well-rounded view of rural healthcare, participants rotate through various departments, including the Emergency Department and Surgery.
Building on More than Technical Skills
What sets this program apart is the focus on Professional Development Days. One day a week, interns step away from clinical rotations to focus on:
- Life Skills: Such as practical workshops on financial literacy and understanding the difference between savings and checking accounts that are led by local experts.
- Emotional Intelligence: Learning how to handle the high-pressure, often emotional environment of a hospital.
Nervous to Apply?
If you’re feeling intimidated by the application or interview process, Macy and Dana have a simple message: Apply anyway!
“Even applying is a great experience… we’re not judging these kids when they come in the door.” said Macy during the podcast.
The interview is treated as a learning tool. If a candidate is visibly nervous, the team will often pause the formal interview just to have a conversation and help them reset. The goal is to build a student’s confidence so that when they apply for med school or first job, the process is already mastered.
