October is here, and at Crawford County Memorial Hospital (CCMH), we’re dedicated to shining a light on a topic of vital importance: breast cancer awareness and screening.
Breast cancer remains the second leading cause of death in women between the ages of 40 and 49. Katie Tremmel, Director of Radiology at CCMH, has the following information as to why early detection is the single most important step you can take.
The Power of the Mammogram
Research shows that annual mammograms lead to the early detection of breast cancers. When cancer is found early, it is most curable, and it allows for more readily available breast conservation therapies.
Here are the essential screening guidelines every woman should know:
- Starting Age: Women should generally begin screening mammograms at the age of 40.
- Frequency: We recommend having a mammogram annually.
- Family History: If you have a first-degree relative (a mother or sister) who was diagnosed with breast cancer, you should start screening 10 years prior to the age they were diagnosed (e.g., if your mom was 45, you start at 35). Always consult your provider about your personal risk factors.
- No Age Limit: Current research and data prove that women 75 years of age and older continue to reap the same benefits of early detection from screening mammograms.
Beyond the Exam Room: Monthly Self-Checks
In addition to your annual mammogram, it is crucial to stay aware of your body. You should perform self-breast exams once a month around the same time each month.
Please contact your healthcare provider promptly if you observe any of the following changes:
- Lumps or bumps
- Pain
- Skin thickening
- Nipple discharge
- Changes in the size or shape of your breast
After you report any of these symptoms, your provider will schedule you for a diagnostic mammogram and possibly an ultrasound to further pinpoint any issues.
Schedule Your Screening Today!
If you are due for your annual screening mammogram and are not currently experiencing any pains or problems, you can contact the Radiology Department at CCMH to set up your appointment. Dial 712-265-2651 to schedule an appointment.
To celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are offering a few fun incentives when you schedule your mammogram appointment in October:
- Every lady who receives a mammogram in October will receive a treat bag.
- We are holding a raffle for a quilt donated by a local quilting group. Simply get your mammogram and enter your name and address for the drawing at the end of the month!
Breast Cancer Awareness Events
- 1.8 Virtual Walk. The ‘One in Eight’ virtual walk is aimed at raising awareness for the one in eight women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. You can walk 1.8 miles anytime during the designated two weeks and submit your name (and miles!) on our website for a prize drawing.
