October is National Physical Therapy Month, a perfect time to recognize the vital role physical therapists play in community health. Here at Crawford County Memorial Hospital (CCMH), we are highlighting our rehabilitation services and the exciting new facility dedicated to patient care.
The Purpose of Physical Therapy
Physical therapy (PT) is an area of medicine focused entirely on rehabilitation, aiming to help people become their “best version of themselves.” This process centers on improving function, strength, balance, and movement.
PT empowers patients to better their abilities at home, in the workplace, and in their daily lives. It is crucial for regaining function after an injury or, in some cases, gaining function they never had. PT is truly both preventive and rehabilitative medicine.
The foundation of physical therapy is setting patient-specific goals. A therapist evaluates whether a patient’s limitations stem from a lack of strength, a mobility issue, a balance problem, or chronic pain. Whether the goal is to enjoy a round of golf again or simply to stand long enough to cook meals, the treatment plan is individually tailored to help the patient regain a better quality of life.
If you are hesitant to start PT because you fear increased pain, be assured that therapists work hard to ensure pain is not increased during therapy and that, ideally, the pain is better afterward. The focus is on improving function and empowering patients to achieve their goals safely and comfortably.

CCMH’s 9,800 Square Foot Rehabilitation Center
CCMH recently moved into its new rehabilitation space following a year of construction. The new space features a larger gym with new functional equipment, including two sets of parallel bars. Patients benefit from multiple private treatment rooms for dedicated, focused care.
Having this high-quality, expanded care available locally is a significant benefit to our community.

How to Begin Physical Therapy at CCMH
While physical therapy is technically a direct-access service in Iowa, insurance companies typically require a physician’s referral for coverage.
To start physical therapy:
- Obtain a Referral: Request a referral from your primary care provider, orthopedist, or specialist.
- Initial Evaluation: A physical therapist will set up an initial evaluation.
- Treatment Plan: The therapist will create an individualized treatment plan based on your specific condition and goals.
