Men’s Health Month: Simple Steps Men Can Take to Protect Their Health

June is Men’s Health Month, a time to encourage men to take a proactive approach to their health and wellness. Many common health conditions, including high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers, can often be prevented or better managed with regular checkups and healthy lifestyle choices.

One of the most important things men can do is establish care with a primary care provider and schedule routine wellness visits. Even if you feel healthy, annual checkups can help identify concerns early, before symptoms appear.

Health Screenings Matter

Preventive screenings play a key role in staying healthy as you age. While recommendations may vary based on personal and family history, some general guidelines include:

Blood Pressure Checks

High blood pressure often has no symptoms, which is why it’s sometimes called the “silent killer.” Adults should have their blood pressure checked regularly, typically at least once a year.

Cholesterol Screening

High cholesterol can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Many adults should begin routine cholesterol screenings in early adulthood and continue as recommended by their provider.

Diabetes Screening

Screening for diabetes may be recommended for adults with risk factors such as being overweight, having high blood pressure, or a family history of diabetes.

Colon Cancer Screening

Colon cancer screening is generally recommended beginning at age 45 for adults at average risk. Screening options may include colonoscopy or other testing methods. Early detection can save lives.

Prostate Health

Men should talk with their healthcare provider about prostate health and whether prostate cancer screening is appropriate for them based on age, risk factors, and family history.

Healthy Habits Make a Difference

Small lifestyle changes can have a big impact on long term health. Some healthy habits to focus on include:

  • Staying physically active most days of the week
  • Eating a balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Managing stress
  • Avoiding tobacco products
  • Limiting alcohol consumption

Mental health is also an important part of overall wellness. If you are experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, or burnout, talk with a healthcare provider. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Don’t Wait Until Something Feels Wrong

Many health conditions are easier to treat when caught early. Regular preventive care can help men stay healthy, active, and present for the people who matter most.

This Men’s Health Month, make your health a priority.
