Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors, but it is also an important time to protect your skin and eyes from harmful ultraviolet, or UV, rays. UV exposure can happen even on cloudy days and can increase your risk for sunburn, premature skin aging, skin cancer, and eye damage.
The good news is that a few simple habits can help keep you protected all summer long
Wear Sunscreen Every Day
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and apply it to all exposed skin before going outside. Don’t forget commonly missed areas like your ears, neck, hands, scalp line, and the tops of your feet.
Sunscreen should be reapplied at least every two hours, or sooner if you are swimming or sweating.
Cover Up When You Can
Clothing can provide an added layer of protection from the sun. Lightweight long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-protective clothing can help reduce direct exposure, especially during long periods outdoors.
Seeking shade is also helpful, particularly during the middle of the day when UV rays are strongest.
Protect Your Eyes
Your eyes need sun protection, too. Choose sunglasses labeled “100% UV protection” or “UV400.” Dark lenses alone do not always mean better UV protection, so be sure to check the label.
A wide-brimmed hat can also help shield your eyes and face from direct sunlight.
Know When to Get Checked
If you notice a new, changing, bleeding, or unusual spot on your skin, it is important to have it evaluated. Regular skin checks can help detect concerns early.

Small steps can make a big difference. This summer, make sun safety part of your daily routine and protect the skin and eyes you are in.
