Scheduling a mammogram is an important step in taking care of your health. Whether you’re preparing for your first screening or returning for a routine appointment, knowing what to expect can help you feel more comfortable and confident.
At Crawford County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) in Denison, Iowa, our Radiology Department offers 3D digital mammography services to support early detection and preventive care.
Why Are Mammograms Important?
Mammograms use low-dose X-rays to examine breast tissue and identify changes that may not be noticeable during a physical exam. Routine screenings can help detect breast cancer before symptoms develop, when treatment may be more effective.
For women at average risk, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends mammograms every two years between ages 40 and 74. Your healthcare provider can help determine the best screening schedule based on your age, health history, and individual risk factors.
How to Prepare for Your Mammogram
A few simple steps can help make your appointment go smoothly:
Avoid deodorant, lotions, and powders around your breasts and underarms on the day of your appointment, as certain ingredients may interfere with imaging.
Wear a two-piece outfit so you can easily change from the waist up.
Share your medical history, including previous mammograms, breast changes, implants, or family history of breast cancer.
What Happens During a Mammogram?
During your appointment, a trained mammography technologist will position each breast between two plates to obtain clear images of the breast tissue.
You may feel pressure or temporary discomfort as the breast is compressed, but each image takes only a few seconds. Once the necessary images are captured, you’ll be able to return to your normal daily activities.
A radiologist will review your images, and you’ll receive information about your results and any recommended follow-up care.
