Health Literacy Month: Understanding Your Care

Health literacy plays an important role in helping you understand your healthcare and make informed decisions about your health. During Health Literacy Month this October, Crawford County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) is highlighting the importance of clear communication between patients and healthcare providers.

Whether you’re visiting your doctor, reviewing test results, or trying to understand a medical bill, you deserve information that makes sense. At CCMH, we’re committed to helping patients feel informed, confident, and supported throughout their healthcare journey.

What Is Health Literacy?

Health literacy is the ability to find, understand, and use health information to make decisions about your care.

Think about the last time you visited a healthcare provider. Did you understand your diagnosis? Were you clear about how to take your medication? Did you know what to do next?

Medical terms, treatment plans, and insurance information can be confusing. Even people who are comfortable reading and understanding information may have trouble making sense of healthcare instructions, especially when they’re feeling sick, stressed, or worried.

Health literacy isn’t just about what patients know. It’s also about how well healthcare organizations communicate and help people find the information they need.

At CCMH, we believe everyone deserves clear answers and the support they need to make informed healthcare decisions.

How CCMH Helps You Understand Your Care

We know that navigating healthcare can sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s why CCMH offers several resources to help patients and families understand their care and access the services they need.

Health Navigator

Not sure where to start or what services you need? Our on-site health navigator helps patients navigate the healthcare system and connect with appropriate resources. Having someone available to help guide you can make it easier to understand your options and take the next steps in your care.

Bilingual Staff

Language should never be a barrier to understanding your health. CCMH has bilingual staff who help support our Spanish-speaking patients, making it easier to communicate and access important healthcare information.

Financial Counselors

Understanding medical bills, insurance coverage, and healthcare costs can be challenging. Our financial counselors are available to help patients better understand the financial side of their care, answer questions, and explore available options.

These resources are part of our commitment to making healthcare easier to understand and navigate for everyone in our community.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions

One of the most important things you can do for your health is ask questions.

Your healthcare team wants you to understand your diagnosis, treatment, and next steps. If something doesn’t make sense, it’s always okay to ask for clarification. You can even ask your provider to explain something in a different way.

Here are a few helpful questions to ask during your next appointment:

  • What is my main health concern?
  • What do I need to do next?
  • Why is this treatment or medication important?
  • Are there any side effects I should watch for?
  • When should I schedule a follow-up appointment?
  • Who should I contact if I have questions later?

You may also find it helpful to write down your questions before your appointment or bring a trusted family member or friend to help you remember important information.

Before leaving, make sure you understand your care instructions and know what steps to take next.

Remember, there is no such thing as a bad question when it comes to your health.

We’re Here for You, Even After You Go Home

Sometimes questions don’t come up until after you’ve left your appointment. You might get home and realize you’re unsure about a medication, a follow-up visit, or something your provider discussed.

You don’t have to figure it out on your own.

If you have questions after your visit, call CCMH at 712-265-2500. Our switchboard operators will be happy to help connect you with the appropriate department so you can get the information you need.

We’re here to help you feel confident about your care, whether you’re at the hospital, in the clinic, or at home.

Better Understanding Starts with a Conversation

Health Literacy Month is a reminder that clear communication is an important part of quality healthcare. When patients understand their health information, they’re better prepared to participate in decisions, follow treatment plans, and take an active role in their well-being.

At Crawford County Memorial Hospital, we’re committed to helping you understand your care every step of the way.
